How to Play Snake Game
Steer, eat, grow, and don’t crash. This guide covers desktop and phone controls, every apple on the board, combos, and the habits that keep a late-game snake alive. Then open the board and try a run — no download required.
- 01
Steer the snake
Use the arrow keys or WASD on desktop, or swipe on the board on mobile to change direction.
- 02
Eat food to grow
Amber apples are +1. Golden apples are +5 but vanish fast. Purple shrinks your tail. Blue apples try to run.
- 03
Chain combos
Bite again within a couple of seconds to stack a combo multiplier. Miss the window and it resets.
- 04
Avoid crashes
Stay off walls, obstacles, and your tail. Try today’s daily maze, unlock skins, and share your score.
- 05
Pause, mute, and share
Space pauses or resumes. M mutes sound. After a run you can share a score card from the results screen.
Desktop and phone controls
The snake never stops moving. You only choose the next heading. On a keyboard that is arrow keys or WASD. On a phone, swipe on the board itself.
Arrows or WASD
Turn the snake. Turns are buffered so a quick second press still counts.
Swipe on the board
Change direction on phones and tablets. Swipe on the playfield, not the chrome around it.
Space
Pause or resume the current run.
M
Mute or unmute arcade sound.
What each apple does
Not every glow is worth the same bite. Learning which apple to chase — and which to skip while you still have a lane — is most of the skill after the first few games.
Amber apple
+1 point. The staple bite that grows the snake and keeps a combo window open.
Golden apple
+5 points, but it disappears quickly. Chase it only if you still have an exit.
Shrink apple
Shortens the tail. Use it when you have painted yourself into a corner.
Darting apple
It tries to run. Catching it is a small skill check in the middle of a run.
Combos
Eat again within a couple of seconds to stack a multiplier. Miss the window and it resets. Combos are how medium runs become high scores without filling the whole board.
Crashes
Walls, obstacles, and your own tail end a run. Wrap-around walls are optional in settings if you want the edges to stop being walls. Daily mazes add extra walls by design.
Speed and modes
Starting speed goes from Chill to Insane, and the clock still ramps as you grow. Pick Classic, Obstacles, Portals, or Daily before you hit Play.
A first-run checklist
- Open the board and choose Classic speed until the turns feel natural.
- Practice a double-turn in an open corner so buffered input clicks.
- Take amber apples in a loop. Leave goldens unless the path is clean.
- When the tail gets long, hunt a shrink apple instead of forcing a greedy bite.
- Try the daily maze once you can survive a quiet Classic run.
